The volunteers are the unsung heroes of the 2017 LIEBHERR World Championships in Düsseldorf. Without their helping hands, there would be no competition because their dedication, their helpfulness and friendliness are simply priceless.

Experience the best table tennis players in the world up close behind the scenes

Catering, shuttle or security service, media and communications, logistics, court and information service – such top events in table tennis offer a huge variety of tasks as well as a look behind the scenes.

Why do more than 300 volunteers work during their leisure time? Because they enjoy it and appreciate it as an extraordinary experience! "It is very special to experience this unique atmosphere behind the scenes," says volunteer Ilona.

Update: Volunteer-Akquise vorerst abgeschlossen

Liebe Tischtennis-Freunde,

liebe Volunteers,

die Suche nach freiwilligen Helfern für die LIEBHERR Tischtennis-WM2017 ist vorerst abgeschlossen. Mit dem Stichtag der Bewerbung, Bewerbungsfrist war der 15. Januar 2017, haben wir knapp 580 Bewerber/-innen zählen können. Aus diesen Freiwilligen werden in den nächsten Tagen diejenigen rausgesucht, die für die knapp 300 zu besetzenden Stellen am besten geeignet erscheinen. Dies bedeutet aber auch, dass knapp jeder zweite Interessent/-in vorerst „nur“ auf der Warteliste landet.

Bis die Einteilung erfolgt ist bitten wir aber noch um ein paar Tage Geduld. Jeder Bewerber/-in erhält Mitte/Ende Februar eine schriftliche Information über die Einteilung (unabhängig davon, ob Zusage oder Warteliste) und das weitere Vorgehen sowie umfangreiche Informationen zum Volunteereinsatz.

alles, was mit Auf-, Abbau, den Spiel-Courts und den vielen Räumlichkeiten der Halle zu tun hat. Vom Verlegen des roten Spezialbodens über das Auf- und Abbauen der Tische und Umrandungen – natürlich unterstützt von den Veranstaltungsprofis vom Verband – bis zum In-Schuss-Halten der Courts und aller Räume der Hallen inkl. dem Nachfüllen von Wasser und der Müllentsorgung.

Ich ein verrückter Tischtennisspieler bin und es mir auch nach vielen Jahren einfach immer noch großen Spaß macht, Volunteer zu sein.

den Verkauf der Tagestickets an Tischtennis-Fans, die sich noch kurzfristig zum Besuch der WM entschließen. Bei uns erhalten sie aber auch erste aktuelle Informationen über den Turnierablauf, Spielergebnisse und an welchen Tischen die Partien der deutschen Spielerinnen und Spieler an diesem Tag angesetzt sind.
I volunteer because...
mir diese Arbeit sehr viel Spaß macht – Verantwortung übernehmen, viel lachen und TT-Spitzensport sind meine Triebfedern. Seit mehr als 50 Jahren gehört mein Herz dem Tischtennissport, wo ich nicht nur als Spieler, sondern auch als Mitorganisator immer schon gerne bei Turnieren dabei bin – früher waren es die eigenen Schulmeisterschaften und in den letzten 15 Jahren eben die internationalen TT-Großveranstaltungen des DTTB. Ich fühle mich in der Volunteer-Familie sehr wohl, wo je nach Veranstaltungsgröße 150 bis 250 ehrenamtliche „Rädchen“ ihren Beitrag zum Gelingen der Turniere leisten.

Die „Courtis“ sind eigentlich Mädchen für alles. Wenn irgendwo was umgebaut werden muss, sind wir da. Auch in Bereichen, für die wir nicht zuständig sind.

aus vielen Ländern so viele Kulturen zusammen sind, und ich dieses Zusammensein faszinierend finde. Auch hat sich innerhalb der Hauptamtlichen und Helfer schon ein richtig fester Kreis entwickelt, auf den man sich bei jeder Veranstaltung schon freut.

At the "Internal Information Desk" we try and meet almost all wishes of the players and officials. In most cases, we give them information about the timetable or the city. We are also the "Lost and found". Should delegation members need changes or further information on flights, hotels etc., they can ask us as well.
I volunteer because...
I can take a look behind the scenes of a major event and I’m contributing to its success. The exciting thing about the information desk is also that you have direct contact with the top players of the world.

In my field of action at the World Cup, the Volunteers take care of...
The volunteers in my field take care of mainly transporting athletes and officials between the airport, railway station, hotel and the venue. In addition, we are always ready for special trips. If players or delegates need something important quickly or e.g. have to see a doctor, we are there for them. When we pick them up from the airport, we are their first contact and have to answer many questions. Of course at the Transportation Service you need a driving license. A good sense of direction is also very helpful.
I volunteer because...
Table tennis is my passion and of course to see again the whole volunteer-family. Major events in table tennis are something like a family reunion. I promise that newcomers get a great insight into such a big event and that you get to know lots of new people and friends.

In my field of action at the World Cup, the Volunteers take care of...
Volunteers over here take care of copying results lists and other relevant documents for the tournament - the press kit for journalists for example. Putting the results to the bulletin boards at the venue for spectators or distribute them to tournament control, media centre or pidgeon holes of the delegations - we know quickly every corner of a vernue. We also create the daily result booklet for spectators and at the end of the tournament a complete summary of the results. No matter how fast we are - we are always eagerly awaited. Furthermore, the TV-stuff always wants to know who plays whom, what the names of the coaches or the umpires are. Don’t underestimate: In our field you have to walk a lot.

The events are always interesting. Not only the sports part. You always get to know new people and new places.

In my field of action at the World Cup, the Volunteers take care of...
We take care of all volunteers. We handle their general questions and personal requests. Some would like to swop their field of action or have the sizes of their volunteers’ training suits changed or simply look for an open ear. We are also in charge of reserve pool volunteers. During tournaments volunteers are needed who can step in at short notice in any field.
