The first World Table Tennis Championships were organised in London in 1926 originally as European Championships. There was one problem: A group of players from India wanted to compete. Hastily just before the matches began, the name was changed into World Championships but the poster advertising for the event remained as European Championships.

Who were the World Champions in Men's Singles in the past and when was the Women’s Team competition introduced at World Championships? In this section you can find all winners from the first World Championships in 1926 to the latest edition in 2016.

By the way: Since 2003, team and individual competitions are taking place separately in annual change. In even years, the World Team Championships are on the agenda, in odd years the champions comprise singles, doubles and mixed doubles.
