In the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia
Welcome to Sports City Düsseldorf!
Each and every year, Düsseldorf is the site of numerous high-profile sports events. For yearly more than 1 million visitors, for citizens, athletes and sponsors the City of Sports offers compelling experiences and emotional images that remain in mind.

Electrifying and committed

The City as a Sports Arena

Sports fans really get their money’s worth in the state capital, Düsseldorf. Whether football league match, ice hockey, table tennis or hockey — there’s something here for everyone. The comprehensive sports offerings are rounded off by prestigious top events, including spectacles such as the PSD Bank Indoor Athletics Meeting, the Judo Grand Prix — Germany’s largest judo event — and the ERGO Hockey Masters, a bi-annual event during which four of the world’s best hockey nations compete. The heavyweight boxing championship match between Wladimir Klitschko and Tyson Fury completed the list of bouts with international clout in 2015.

Düsseldorf has long dazzled with big names — regularly becoming a venue for sports competitions itself along the way. For next to the classic sites ESPRIT arena, ISS DOME, Mitsubishi Electric HALLE and CASTELLO Düsseldorf, major sports events are also being held at the city’s public locations, such as the traditional METRO GROUP Marathon, and the T3 Triathlon, which has taken place at the Düsseldorf Media Harbour since 2011.

The Whole (Sports) World is Watching Düsseldorf in 2017

2017 will be a year of international sports highlights in the city on the Rhine, beginning with the world’s largest indoor sports event, the Table Tennis World Cup. The Triathlon European Championship, which takes place alongside the T3 Triathlon, follows; then, on 1 and 2 July, the Grand Départ of the Tour de France takes place in and around the state capital.

Football Has a Tradition

The city on the Rhine is proud of its traditional club, Fortuna Düsseldorf, which is currently kicking in the 2nd Bundesliga. Fortuna’s home — the ESPRIT arena — is however also attractive for international football matches. The German national team, for example, had its first appearance after winning the world cup here, and proudly presented the fourth star.

European Ice Hockey Record

People are also proud of Düsseldorf EG here in the state capital. The team is currently playing at the top of the charts. And ice hockey fans remember 10 January 2015 with a smile — on that day, an absolutely extraordinary match took place with the DEL Winter Game. 51,125 spectators followed the derby between DEG and the Kölner Haie, along with the spectacular accompanying programme at the ESPRIT arena — a new European record for an ice hockey league match.

The Table Tennis Record Champion

The European table tennis world has its navel in Düsseldorf: after all, this is the city that the 27-time German champion, 4-time Champions League winner and 6-time European Cup winner, Borussia Düsseldorf, calls home.

On the Way to the Olympic Games

The focus is, however, not only on professional sports and major sports events — the support of municipal sports associations and promising young talent is also a priority. Case in point: Stockheim Team Rio, which accompanied experienced athletes and young athletic talent on their way to the Olympic Games this year in Rio de Janeiro.

Düsseldorf: Sports City with Prospects

Düsseldorf Congress Sport & Event attends to the global transportation of the “Sports City Düsseldorf” brand. The campaign focuses on the acquisition and realisation of major sports events, consistent pro sports marketing, and active promotion of young talent. Thanks to the bundling of the large venues with a wealth of sports know-how, all under one roof, the subsidiary of the state capital and Messe Düsseldorf is capable of providing sports promoters with complete solutions from a single source.

All of this demonstrates that the city on the Rhine loves and lives sports. That being said — welcome to Sports City Düsseldorf!
